Sunday Family Service

Today’s Dharma Talk was given by Shirley Yanagisawa. November is a month of showing gratitude. From Veterans’ Day where we thank our military members for their service to Eitaikyo and, at the end of the month, Thanksgiving. Shirley shared what she’s thankful for, including her family, the sangha, being able to travel, and, most recently, the University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball team.

Jean brought emergency water storage bags, which have been provided by several state and local government agencies and are being distributed through Project Dana.

Sunday Family Service

At today’s Family Service, Shirley Yanagisawa’s Dharma Talk was about the interdependence of all life. Shirley shared examples from her recent trip to Japan to visit extended family members and brought a few chrysalis that started as caterpillars in her yard and will eventually turn into monarch butterflies.

Sunday Family Service & Remembrance Day

For today’s Dharma Talk, Shirley Yanagisawa shared three things in November that help us to remember and give thanks:

  1. Veterans Day: we are reminded of the many sacrifices of the past and present members of the Armed Forces for our freedom.

  2. Eitaikyo: we held this special service last week as our expression of gratitude to the many members of our temple whose dedication, sacrifices, and support have made it possible for Kailua Hongwanji Mission to be what it is today.

  3. Thanksgiving: we all enjoyed our turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and other food items, some of which we are all still enjoying as leftovers days later. Shirley made her broccoli casserole on Thanksgiving, and she made it again to share for today’s refreshments.

Shirley asked each member to note three things we are thankful for. The notes will be strung together and placed on display in the temple.

Our next Family Service will be on Sunday, December 9, 2018, which will be followed by the Annual General Membership meeting. There will be no service on Sunday, December 2.

Father's Day Service

Today's Father's Day Dharma message was by Shirley. She remembered her father and all that he did for her and her siblings growing up on Maui, such using his carpentry skills to build something or picking ogo and hunting for tako.

Sunday Family Service

For today's Dharma Talk, Shirley spoke of gratitude and how she's grateful for the sangha, who come together to help and support the temple.

She also shared a recent newspaper article about the Choose Love Enrichment Program. Last fall, Kaelepulu Elementary in Kailua became the pilot school for the Choose Love program in Hawaii. The curriculum is centered around four core values: courage, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion.

You can’t always choose what happens to you, but you can always choose how you respond and you can always respond in love.
— Scarlett Lewis, Founder, Choose Love
