Sunday Family Service

Today’s Dharma Talk was given by Bob Nishita. Bob shared his thoughts on attitude and why it’s important to keep a positive attitude even in the face of adversity. As an example, Bob shared that he had been all set to use the popular Japanese TV show Oshin that’s currently airing on KIKU as the example for his Dharma Talk, but an unexpected shift in the plot derailed its use at the last minute.

Former KHM minister Rev. Sumi visited us today. Rev. Sumi was our resident minister from March 1985 to March 1987.

After today’s service, volunteers stayed behind to help prepare our monthly newsletter, Kalyana Mitra, for mailing.

Sunday Family Service

Today’s Dharma Talk was given by Bob Nishita. Bob shared a cartoon that he saw that showed two people facing each other with a sign in between them. One person insisted that the sign showed a “nine,” while the other was positive that it was a “six.” Both were right; they just couldn’t see it from the other person’s perspective.

He also shared a show he watched on NHK, The Fisherman and the Forest. The documentary tells the story of an oyster farmer Shigeatsu Hatakeyama, who is forced to rebuild after the 2011 tsunami devastated the ocean that he farmed. The story demonstrates the interdependence of all life, as the path to recovery is found in the surrounding forest.

First Sunday Family Service

Bob Nishita's Dharma message for today's First Sunday Family Service was about judgement. We often judge others based on how we see things from our point of view. When you point at someone, three fingers are pointing right back at you.

Bob also talked to us about being different. All of us are different and that's a good thing. Can you imagine if all of us were the same? We'd be arguing and agreeing with ourselves!

After celebrating July birthdays and refreshments, today's First Sunday family activity was making shaving cream and glue ice cream cones.

We celebrated July birthdays
